Go Sports Smart Challenge-Very Favourable Results!
A big congratulations is due to the 103 Winter League participants who took part in the Go Sport Smart Challenge between October and the end of February.
As part of this initiative Go Dungarvan encouraged as many of the Winter League participants as possible to choose sustainable transport methods e.g. cycling, walk/jog/run or car sharing, while travelling to and from the event each Wednesday evening. We were overwhelmed with the enthusiasm of all concerned.
Go Dungarvan monitored participants people's travel habits by means of three traffic counts over the course of the challenge. The challenge was fully embraced by all concerned and this was indicated by a huge decrease in the amount of cars driving to and parking at Dungarvan Sports Centre. From the initial baseline count in October there was a decrease of 11% in 'Winter League related' cars parking at or in the vicinity of Dungarvan Sports Centre in the January count. However the final traffic survey was carried out on the last night of the league on 20th February and this registered a decrease of 28% on the baseline results. This was an absolutely amazing result that nobody could have imagined at the beginning of the challenge and is positive proof that the awareness raising regarding sustainable transport which took place as part of the programme does indeed pay off.
Well done to all at West Waterford AC for taking on this challenge. All at go Dungarvan look forward to working with other clubs over the course of the Smarter travel project on similar initiatives.
